The Well was a sacred Pagan site in Celtic times. When the people of Watchet turned to Christianity they claimed the Well was the Fountain of St Decumanus... sweet, healthful and necessary to the inhabitants for drinking purposes.
In the spirit of Decuman himself, the parish of today welcomes everyone to St. Decumans Well. It is for all who respect what is sacred, good and holy, who want to be quiet, find peace or a place for prayer. Baptisms and services take place at the Well. If a group of people wish to worship at the Well they are asked to register with the Vicar of St. Decumans whose responsibility it is to ensure that all worship there respects the life-enchancing sacredness of the Well.
